The Hogueras de San Juan is an annual grand festival held in Alicante, Spain, typically from June 20 to June 24. This celebration has deep cultural and historical significance, originating as a way to mark the summer solstice. The festival culminates in the “Night of Fire” (Nit de Sant Joan) on June 24, where large wooden and papier-mâché sculptures, known as “Hogueras,” are set ablaze, symbolizing the purging of bad luck and the welcoming of new beginnings.
During the festival, a variety of events take place, including:
- Parades: Each community creates thematic floats, with residents dressed in traditional costumes participating in the procession.
- Fireworks Displays: Spectacular fireworks shows are held daily at 2 PM in Plaza de los Luceros.
- Folk Dance and Music Performances: These showcase the traditional culture and arts of Alicante.
- Food Markets: Offering local delicacies and handcrafted goods.
